This past week’s episode of AEW Dynamite was the first episode to feature CM Punk, which led many folks to assume that AEW had a massive episode planned. However, aside from a fun but too short match between The Lucha Bros & Varsity Blondes, fans weren’t exactly impressed. This might have been due to AEW having to change their plans at the last moment however, due to circumstances outside of their reach.
Gangrel Was Supposed To Appear To Assist Christian Cage With Kenny Omega
One major change was the removal of a call back to the early career of Christian Cage. Christian is currently set to clash with Kenny Omega at All Out for the AEW World Championship, having previously defeated him for the Impact Wrestling Championship. However, while they had a segment on Dynamite, it was changed at the last minute.
Originally, they were going to have Gangrel show up, call back to his time in The Brood with Christian, and give Don Callis & Kenny Omega a good ol’ fashioned bloodbath. This was done recently by WWE with Edge and Seth Rollins however, which is likely why AEW scrapped the segment – not wanting to be directly compared to WWE in this way. Despite this, Gangrel reportedly was still paid by AEW, and could still pop up in the future.
A Planned Match Was Pulled Due To COVID-19 and 2.0 Couldn’t Show Up
Also holding this show back was a planned match being pulled. While the names haven’t been revealed, two wrestlers who were set to clash were both pulled from the show due to testing positive for COVID-19. Both names were reported to be vaccinated, but still were unable to compete on Wednesday.
Finally, a segment with 2.0 was planned, but had to be taken off the show; but for a good reason this time. Matt Lee is now a father, and his wife had given birth shortly before Dynamite. It’s unclear if the baby also things Sting is actually ‘Jumping’ Jeff Farmer like their father, but we will keep you up to date on this developing story.
