Colby Covington’s mud-slinging match with former teammate Dustin Poirier is only getting worse. Following Covington’s claim that Poirier forced him out of American Top Team, Covington claims that the two aren’t even close in terms of fighting ability. Not only would Colby win, he says, but it wouldn’t be much of a competition at all.
Covington told James Lynch that he would bully Poirier in the Octagon and there’s nothing Poirier could do about it. “I just see me giving him a wedgie in the Octagon and just slapping him all around the Octagon, throwing him from one side of the cage to the other until he quits. It would probably be a verbal submission.”
Chaos on Poirier: “It Wouldn’t Be Competitive”
Colby continued, claiming that Poirier would tap out from “being absolutely annihilated”, although what exactly he means by that is unclear. Perhaps it would just be Covington’s prodigious trash talk.
“He’d probably tap out and be the first fighter in a high-profile fight to tap out from being absolutely annihilated. It wouldn’t be competitive, and deep down inside he knows that.
But he talked reckless before and I just want to keep him accountable for his words. I’m a man of my word. I don’t just talk the talk, I walk the walk. I want to see the same out of these other people who are talking reckless.”
Colby’s rivalry with his former teammate goes back years, but in the immediate future a welterweight bout between the two seems unlikely. Colby is set to fight against Kamaru Usman once more, challenging for Usman’s welterweight title.
Dustin Poirier is linked either to a title fight against Charles Oliveira or a money fight against Nate Diaz. It’s extremely unlikely that a Poirier vs Covington grudge match will take place this year. Once their schedules are open, however, the UFC may well decide there’s money in it.
If both Poirier and Covington win titles, for example, a champ vs champ fight may well be on the cards. Few fighters have successfully switched divisions, but Dustin Poirier is naturally much heavier than the 155lb lightweight limit at which he currently fights. A welterweight superfight might just be the sort of money-spinning exercise the UFC loves to make.
Dustin has mentioned in the past that he would like to eventually move up to welterweight. Perhaps claims of his impending retirement will have to wait until the score between these two former teammates is well and truly settled.
