In a move that has surprised absolutely nobody, Jake Paul revealed that he still wants to fight Conor McGregor. The YouTuber is set to take on Tyron Woodley later this month, but after that he may well pursue “The Notorious” for a money fight in the boxing ring.
Paul told MMAFighting.com that McGregor isn’t what he used to be, but as one of the biggest stars (if not the biggest star) in combat sports, he remains an enticing opponent. It’s unclear if Paul wants the money that comes with a McGregor fight, or if he wants to see Conor McGregor throw a tantrum as he did following his second consecutive loss to Dustin Poirier.
Jake Paul: McGregor “not as interesting” but still wants to “beat him up”
“He’s sort of lost that spunk and I think people are kind of second guessing him. He’s not the same Conor, that’s for sure. It’s not as interesting, however, I would still just like to beat him up.
Because I would want him to freak out in the ring and go crazy and lose his sh*t. I think it would be funny to see him break down like how he did against Dustin Poirier. And by the way, it’s still a massive fight.”
Paul continued, revealing his begrudging respect for McGregor. “Regardless of what anybody wants to say about Conor, you have to respect him for what he’s done, becoming the face of the fight game.
I don’t hate the guy. Do I like him? No, but you have to respect him. All I’ve said though is I want to fight him and knock him out.
Because A) it would be a big fight, big business and B) give the people what they want. That’s one of the most talked about fights to happen in the past year. I think it still makes sense regardless if he’s winning or losing, people want to see that.”
McGregor’s recent performances – or lack thereof – do raise the question of whether his star power will endure in the face of defeat. While Conor is undoubtedly the UFC’s biggest star, the promotion seems to have moved beyond him. McGregor’s drawing power came about initially because he was one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC.
However, his abysmal record in recent years does not match the enormous hype that accompanies every McGregor fight. Conor has won just one fight since 2016. Jake Paul is, by virtue of knocking out a couple other YouTubers and Ben Askren, undefeated in the boxing ring. If anything, a “money fight” for McGregor against Jake Paul would truly confirm just how far the Irishman’s star has fallen.
