Tomorrow night at NJPW Resurgence, David Finlay will once again clash with his Young Lion rival in Jay White. They will meet in one of the main event matches for the NEVER Openweight Championship, with the odds heavily in the favour of White retaining. This was likely always the plan, but after a recent interview, it seems like Finlay might be on his way out of NJPW very soon, with his eyes set on joining WWE.
David Finlay Hints At Wanting To Get Into WWE NXT
The third generation talent was recently interviewed for Wrestling Observer Radio, and while he didn’t say outright that WWE was his goal, it was heavily implied through some scattered tidbits. Firstly, he has plans to move to Florida, where WWE’s NXT brand is located. He named Kyle O’Reilly as a dream opponent and Shawn Micheals as a dream coach, both of whom currently work in NXT, with Shawn teaching the finishing classes in the WWE Performance Center.
Finlay also claimed to enjoy the western style of wrestling more than the japanese style, and noted that he doesn’t know what his future in wrestling holds. This all seems to point to a jump to WWE NXT, but he could also be planting seeds to try and get a better deal with NJPW when his contract comes up. Finlay has been with NJPW for years now, having come through their young lion system and slowly working his way up the card. He had his best singles showings yet earlier this year in the New Japan Cup, where he made it to the semi-finals against Will Ospreay.
What Could His WWE Career Look Like?
When it comes to the prospects of Finlay in WWE, things are neither promising or negative at a glance. He’s 6’0” and 28 years old, so a solid height and age for the recent hiring practices. Add in family legacy with his father Fit Finlay being a legend, and being well regarded backstage, and it’s a good perk for Finlay. It might not be a shot right to the top for Finlay in WWE, but you can see him settling into a similar role as he is in with NJPW.
Finlay would fit well into the WWE mid-card on shows like RAW or Smackdown, in a similar role to others like Ricochet, Apollo Crews, Elias and more. Occasional spotlight, and able to work solid TV matches every week. His lack of promo ability and physique might hurt his overall chances, but those are things the WWE PC could help with.
