Commentators at this Saturday’s headline bout facetiously named Sean Strickland a “psychopath”, including his former training partner Michael Bisping. Bisping might now know how right he was, with Strickland revealing post-fight exactly how much he loves violence.
During the post-fight press conference, Strickland told reporters that he would absolutely love to take somebody’s life in the Octagon.
Sean Strickland “would love nothing more than to kill somebody in the ring”
Sean Strickland “would love nothing more than to kill somebody in the ring” “If you like to f*cking hurt people, you’re in the right sport!
I would love nothing more than to kill somebody in the ring. Nothing more. It would make me super happy. I would own that sh*t, too. Be a psychopath, it’s f*cking fun!”
Strickland’s chaotic, rambling persona is nothing new in combat sports, where men have laid claim to psychosis for decades. In the press conference, he discussed title aspirations, future opponents, and the trappings of fame.
“I’m probably the last person they want as the champion. So Sean, what do you think about the UFC? I mean it’s cool, they pay me well, it’s cool. I’m the last one they probably want to be the champion.
There’s always going to be another killer. I’m going to fight somebody in a few more months, I might win, I might get knocked out.
I just like to fight. I like to make money. If I go somewhere with it, great, if not. What did Derrick Lewis say? What was his last quote about if you let me run the division, you guys should all retire?
I love Derrick Lewis. He’s the man. I’m just happy to be here. You should never enjoy fame because it’s fake. It’s f*cking fake.
There was a point where Uriah Hall was in every interview, every media… ‘Uriah Hall!’ And now it’s like he’s in the twilight of his career, he’s getting older. It’s like it’s just bullsh*t.
I like you guys all, but it’s all bullsh*t. You guys know this.”
Sean Strickland is one of the more colorful characters in the division, but whether he has what it takes to scale the ranks of the top 10 and challenge Israel Adesanya is another story. He’ll be looking for another ranked opponent next, but in the meantime Adesanya has a rematch against Robert Whittaker to worry about.
What do you think is next for Sean Strickland? Let us know in the comments.
