Last night while Smackdown Live was airing, WWE was very busy behind the scenes. Twelve more names from the roster were released, including Ari Sterling & Leon Ruff, who were in action on 205 Live right after Smackdown finished airing. Some major names were in this batch, including former NXT North American Champion Bronson Reed and veteran women’s wrestler Mercedes Martinez, but where can we expect to see these names in 30 days? There is an expectation that AEW signs someone, but who would truly benefit the AEW roster?
Mercedes Martinez Would Bring A Veteran Edge
The one name from the batch that is a no-brainer is Mercedes Martinez. While the AEW men’s division is absolutely stacked with talent both fresh and experienced, you really can’t say the same about their women’s division. The only notable veteran is Serena Deeb, which makes someone like Mercedes Martinez an incredible get for the AEW roster.
Martinez has proven to be a top talent still, having some great matches this year with the likes of Xia Li & Raquel Gonzalez in NXT. She would no doubt fit right into the AEW Women’s roster, and has already worked for AEW in the past, having been involved in an early Casino Battle Royale.
Jake Atlas Is A Top Future Prospect Akin To MJF Or Sammy Guevara
One name that might get lost in the shuffle is Jake Atlas. The 26 year old was a standout on NXT & 205 Live for the past year, with his matches against Tomasso Ciampa & Santos Escobar showing how talented he can be. Atlas can be compared to the likes of Jungle Boy, MJF & Sammy Guevara as one of the major future stars of professional wrestling.
As AEW continues to invest in the future of the industry, someone like Atlas or even former NXT North American Champion Leon Ruff would be excellent. They’re far from complete packages like you’d get with Mercedes Martinez, but with some focus and some polishing? Atlas is someone who could truly shine and be a future main event talent.
