In an industry like professional wrestling, injuries are going to happen. It all comes with the environment. There are very few moves that someone can do that have no risk of injury, down to even a simple suplex or kick. That is sadly the case tonight with Mercedes Martinez. Following a mixed tag team match with Jake Atlas against Xia Li and Boa of Tian Sha, Martinez would be taken to the back to be checked for injury.
Mercedes Martinez Was Knocked Out During The Closing Moments Of The Match
While the match was an alright one which saw the return of Boa following an injury in 2019, the finish is all that fans will remember. Mercedes Martinez would take a swift spinning heel kick from Xia Li, and slump to the mat. Being a twenty year veteran, fans first assumed she just did an incredible job of selling his kick, helping to make Li look like the martial arts badass NXT likes to present her as.
However, when the referee threw up an X with his arms after Mercedes Martinez couldn’t continue the match? There was some wonky camera work to hide her being checked on by Li, everyone knew something went horribly wrong. Li had caught Martinez flush with the kick, and caused a legitimate knock out.
Going To Hospital For A Better Assessment Than WWE Can Provide
After being checked out backstage, Martinez would be taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out further. Taking someone’s heel to your jawline can take anyone out, especially when it’s from someone who trains in kickboxing like Xia Li. We can only hope that Martinez doesn’t have a broken jaw and a concussion following this match.
With Li immediately breaking character to check on Martinez in the ring with the cameras out of view, it’s clear that she was concerned for the well being of her opponent after this freak accident. It’s unlikely there will be any major repercussions for Li, but she might be told to tone her kicks down a touch.
We here at The Overtimer wish Mercedes Martinez a quick and complete recovery. Do you think Li will keep her push following this? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
