It’s time for the final first round match in the NXT Breakout Tournament. The hard hitting Joe Gacy & high flier Trey Baxter couldn’t be further away in style and age, but are about the same in terms of skill. Whoever wins will go on to face Carmelo Hayes in the next round, and this one is truly too close to call.
Medical Update On Adam Cole
Before the match, we’d get an injury update on Adam Cole. Kyle O’Reilly & Adam Cole are set to finally finish their feud at NXT Takeover 36, especially after things reached a fever pitch last week. Following Cole vs. Bronson Reed, O’Reilly attacked from behind before hitting a brainbuster onto the steel steps.
Cole suffered a minor neck injury, and next week we will see them meet face to face with William Regal watching over the proceeding. This next clash might be their most dangerous yet, which is saying a lot. NXT Takeover 36 could see them redefine what violent means.
Trey Baxter Soars For The Huge Victory
But after this update, both Gacy & Baxter hit the ring. Gacy would show the early power edge as he threw Baxter adside. In a battle of speed and power, power wins every time if they catch the speedy one. A big lariat dropped Baxter, before he’d catch Gacy with a quick kick to the face. Sent to the outside, Gacy would catch a dive from Baxter and slam him off the apron, before taking him back into the ring.
Baxter would grab a quick sleeper hold before being flung to the mat, where he’d be kicked in the spine. Some quick clubbing lariats punished Baxter, before he was brought into the middle of the ring with a huge suplex. An armbar was applied, but Baxter twisted and hit a jawbreaker to get free. The springboard dropkick sent Gacy outside, before Baxter nailed two successful dives before hitting the Fosbury Flop to deal some major damage.
Gacy got into the ring first, only for Baxter to dive onto him with a senton. Another sleeper hold was applied, but Gacy cannonballed into the corner with Baxter on his back. Gacy went up top for something, and Baxter countered with another jawbreaker before a 450 double stomp for the win.
A very fast paced and back and forth match. Baxter would prove that he could beat a bigger man with his absolutely insane speed. The 450 double stomp would get a big reaction, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg for Baxter. Match Rating: 2.5/5 (** 1/2)
