WWE 205 Live Results: Joe Gacy Defeats Desmond Troy To Qualify For NXT Breakout Tournament (07/02)

When WWE signed former three time CZW Champion Joe Gacy, everyone was waiting for him to make his debut. We don’t have to wait any longer, as Gacy is in a qualifying match for this year’s NXT Breakout tournament. His opponent is Desmond Troy, a talented Amateur wrestler who has been making his way around WWE in matches against major names like Seth Rollins, Karrion Kross and Sheamus. Gacy is a strong favorite in this one, but Troy has been waiting for a moment like this.

    Desmond Troy Starts Off Hot

A styles clash for sure, as Troy brings technical skill and Gacy brings brawling and violence. We’d see this early as Troy went for a takedown and Gacy dodged before driving him into the corner. Troy would get a quick back takedown and slam Gacy down, but Gacy blocked the second takedown using the ropes before hitting an armdrag.

Gacy would be taken down with a leg trip, before getting back up and running the ropes before being hit with a crossbody. He’d launch off some strikes before Troy snapped off a quick double leg takedown, before grabbing an armbar. Gacy would get behind Troy to try and break the hold and get wrist control, before being thrown with an arm drag.

Troy hit a back elbow before being dropped by a forearm followed by a suplex from Gacy. Gacy would fail to keep control on the mat before just hitting a pump kick. Some short lariats in the corner would soften up Troy for a big backdrop. Gacy was able to get a two count, before applying pressure to the neck of Troy by driving his forearms down.

Joe Gacy Shows Why He Belongs In NXT

Troy would fight hard to get out, finally getting free using a roll up. Gacy kept the pressure on with a hard strike in the corner, before tossing Troy across the ring hard. The damage was piling up but Troy was able to dodge a charge in the corner.

Troy would ride this advantage into a comeback with some belly to belly suplexes. The straps came down off his shoulders of Troy as he nailed a stinger splash and Northern Lights Suplex for a near fall. Gacy nailed a headbutt to send Troy outside, but Troy would get him down with some gutwrench suplexes for another close call.

Troy & Gacy would slug it out in the ring before Gacy hit a uranage, dumping Troy to the mat. Gacy would hit a handspring lariat, and that was it for this qualifying match. Troy did good, but Gacy did better.

A great mix of styles that lended itself well to a fast paced match. Troy looked better than ever before in this one, finally finding the Kurt Angle like blend of Amateur & Pro that folks have been wanting from him. Gacy looked imposing in his debut, and was able to close out strong to kick off his NXT run. Match Rating: 3/5 (***)

Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
