At the end of Money in The Bank, Roman Reigns stood tall over a defeated Edge and everyone was wondering who would be his next challenger. The answer was clear when the sixteen time world champion John Cena hit the ring, making his long-awaited return to the company that made him a star. It was hard for him to get his match, relying on Finn Balor being taken out of the way by Baron Corbin during a contract signing, but tonight he will look for his seventeenth world championship. Reigns has upped the stakes and said that if he loses, he will leave WWE behind. Who will be standing when the smoke settles?

Big Match John Is A Step Slow

Big Match John would hit the ring and say he’s ready, as the Final Boss level music of Roman Reigns would hit. Paul Heyman would join him down, with The Usos heading to the back. Reigns doesn’t need them to do this family business. They’d stare daggers before locking up, with Cena getting a side headlock only to be shoved off and took a shoulder tackle.

Cena got a roll up for a one count, knowing he only needs three to win. A small package was next, and it got a two count. Reigns responded by punching Cena in the face and mouthing off to the fans. Another roll up and another two count, before taking a back elbow to the face. Cena would be whipped into the corner, and Reigns jaw jacked some more before hitting a suplex.

A chokehold was applied, with Cena fighting to his feet only to be dropped by a gut kick. Cena was thrown out of the ring like a piece of trash. On the outside he’d counter some punches before being thrown into the steel steps. More posing from Reigns, and Cena was hit off the steel steps. Reigns would shockingly pose some more, now with the WWE Universal Championship, while Cena rolled back into the ring.

Back in the ring Cena got another two count off a roll up before being dropped once again. Cena finally put some effort in with an attempt at the Attitude Adjustment, but was hit with a DDT instead. He’d block some punches and look for the shoulder tackle to set up a comeback and be taken out with an uppercut.

Roman Reigns Ends The Night On Top

Reigns got rolled up again, but kicked out before applying a sleeper hold in the middle of the ring. Cena hit a desperate lariat but couldn’t follow up, he’d get the shoulder tackles and spin-out powerbomb, with Five Knuckle Shuffle countered into the Guillotine Choke before Cena got a Jackknife Cover for a two count. A superman punch knocked Cena down, but he’d counter a spear with a kick.

Another attempt at Five Knuckle Shuffle landed, and Attitude Adjustment landed for a two count. Cena applied the STF, but Reigns broke out. They went to the outside and Reigns hit the drive-by. Reigns ran in for a spear, but got an Attitude Adjustment through the announce table, but in the ring only got a two count.

Cena went up top for a leg drop and was caught in a powerbomb, getting a two count. Reigns missed a superman punch and was rolled up for a one count before hitting the punch for a two count again. Cena dodged a spear, and Reigns hit the corner post, before being pulled up top for a Super AA, but Reigns kicked out again. Reigns and Cena exchanged blows in the middle of the ring, with Reigns finally hitting a spear for the win.

This was a boring, by the numbers and overly long main event. There was very little heat on the build, despite WWE’s best efforts and intentions. They wanted this to be an epic, but lacked anything compelling to do so. This was one of the worse Reigns main events, up there with his infamous similar clash with Triple H. Match Rating: 1.5/5 (* 1/2)

After the match, a bearded up Lesnar would come to the ring with Roman Reigns in his sights, with Paul Heyman looking like he saw a ghost. He let them leave without incident, saving this fight for another day. Will Lesnar defeat Reigns? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
