It’s time for the feud between Matt Taven & Vincent to end. This has been ongoing since 2019, and for the sake of their careers tonight needs to be the end. Matt Taven was ready to put his career on the line to get a shot at Vincent, but Vincent simply wanted Taven’s shot at the ROH World Championship if he was to win.
Tonight, it will truly be one on one, as they’re locked in a Steel Cage to prove who is truly the better man. This is the first Steel Cage match in Seven Years for ROH, and is set to be a brutal war. Fans have an odd hatred for Matt Taven for being in the right place at the wrong time, but this rivalry has been one of the best ROH has run in a long time. But tonight will be The Last Stand.
Fighting Before The Bell Even Rings
Vincent carried a bloody Matt Taven shirt to the ring from a previous beatdown, hanging it about the door so Taven sees it. Speaking of Taven, he was shaved and had a haircut, looking back to himself after a long time away. Unphased by the shirt, Taven would get the cage door kicked into his face.
Taven slammed the door into Vincent’s face, before slamming him into the steel post. It was chaos before they even hit the ring, and Vincent would use a steel chair to deal some damage. Even after being thrown into the crowd, Vincent took a fan’s chair and whacked a flying Taven away. They’d brawl away through the sold out crowd and onto the ramp, where Vincent hit a backdrop.
Taven hit a spinkick and grabbed out a table, with the Kingdom triangle painted upon it. Vincent hit a Russian Leg Sweep into the cage, before ramming Taven into the barricade. They’d finally enter the cage, but not before Taven took the door to the head. Vincent wanted to lock the cage door, so they’re going nowhere.
Matt Taven Came Ready To Fight
The match can finally start, and Vincent would throw the key into the crowd. They’d start to brawl it out, with Vincent nailing a flatliner after kicking the knee of Taven. Vincent went up top and Taven took him down with a spinning neckbreaker. Taven nailed some running knee strikes against the cage, before a frog splash for a two count.
Looking for the Climax led to Taven being pushed into the cage. Vincent would hook his toes on the cage to block a suplex, before applying a choke hold that was only broken with a low blow. They’d go to the top rope and Vincent hit a side effect to the mat, for another two count.
Another brawl in the middle of the ring would see them throw hands and each other into the cage. Vincent took the springboard kick, but Taven couldn’t follow up. Bateman came out and added barbed wire to the match, cutting his hand in the process. Taven was distracted and hit with a German Suplex. Mike Bennett would try to take out Bateman but get dropped with a neckbreaker.
Taven fought like hell, to avoid the barbed wire on the cage, but had his face grinded right into it. Now bloody, Taven would fight to get to his feet, as Vincent talked some trash and went for an Acid Drop. A shove into the cage changed the plans.
Stooping To His Level
With nothing more to lose, Taven grabbed the barbed wire and wrapped it around the head of Vincent. He was torturing him with a crown of barbed wire, and nailed a DDT right onto it. Struggling to his feet, he’d pull the barbed wire off Vincent and hit a running knee strike. Taven pulled an axe out from the apron of the ring, and now he was looking like The Horror King.
Another running knee, and it was getting clear that Taven was in control, but a bloody Vincent nailed a big headbutt. Vita VonStarr was out, with a bag of thumbtacks, which was thrown into the ring. She tried to climb into the cage, but missed a dive and got Vincent instead. Taven poured tacks on the mat, and wiped his face with the bag. VonStarr took a backdrop onto them, as Vincent struggled to stand. Taven hit the Climax onto the tacks, but Vincent kicked out.
He’d scale the cage, but instead of escape he went for the splash and missed, and took an Acid Drop into the tacks for a two count. It was going to take a lot to end this, and Dutch was here to help Vincent. He’d scale the cage, but Taven sent him through the tables, only to take a cutter from the top of the cage from Vincent, ending this match.
As advertised, this was a drawn, brutal and emotional fight of a match. They truly sold the hate of their storyline, not wanting to win more than they wanted to hurt each other. It was violent as hell, and really used the cage well. Add in a hot and bloodthirsty crowd, and you have a perfect end to a blood feud. Match Rating: 4/5 (****)
