CM Punk was able to win his debut match in AEW – defeating Darby Allin. However, he’s going to face another new name tonight in his first TV match in seven years. After picking a fight with Team Taz, he’s got Powerhouse Hobbs to worry about. They tried to take him out with a powerbomb through a table and failed – the biggest mistake you can possibly make. When you come for Punk, you finish the job.
Powerhouse Hobbs Isn’t Giving Up Any Size
Punk started off with a running dropkick, catching Hobbs off guard. He’d kick away at the legs of Hobbs, but one blow from Hobbs sent him rolling away. Punk would stay focused and kick away at the leg some more, before getting a Russian Leg Sweep and giving Hook a middle finger salute. Hobbs was lifted up for Go To Sleep, but Hook got on the apron to distract him.
Punk went after Hook, which allowed Hobbs to hit a running crossbody block. Taking control of the veteran, before getting rolled up for a two count. Hobbs would take Punk right down with a body block, before crushing him onto the apron. We’d go into a picture in picture break, which saw Hobbs just continue the attack and Hook getting a few cheap blows in.
CM Punk Puts Another Man To Sleep
Back from the break, Punk would end up in a bear hug, before being able to fight free. He’d drop Hobbs, heading up top for a diving elbow drop – Macho Man style! Hobbs would be able to kick out at two, before being lifted up into the Go To Sleep. Punk would be countered and taken down with a spinebuster for a two count.
Hobbs looked for a Pumphandle Slam, but Punk would fight out into a sleeper hold. A running powerslam got Hobbs a two count, before he’d go to an odd spot for him – the second rope. Punk would catch him with a hurricanrana, before a triangle choke before being slammed out. Hobbs would take a roundhouse kick, before taking the Go To Sleep for the finish.
An awkward match without much chemistry, which showed some limitations in both Punk & Hobbs. Just not a good mesh of styles, but the crowd helped it remain watchable. Match Rating: 2.75/5 (** 3/4)
