When CM Punk was announced to have signed with AEW, there was a shift in the world of professional wrestling. It was always trending in this direction, with AEW being the fresh and exciting thing on the market – while WWE has been rather stale. However, the moment when Cult of Personality hit the ears of fans in Chicago that everything truly changed. CM Punk has since returned to the ring to defeat Darby Allin in a hard fought match at All Out, but it’s been the movement of merch that has made him worth it to AEW.
CM Punk Has Already Sold Over 100k Shirts For AEW
It’s always been known that CM Punk is someone who moves merchandise like it’s no one’s business. He’s got a genuine connection with fans, and it shows in everyone wanting his new shirt. For several days after his first AEW shirt launched, Pro Wrestling Tees could barely keep their servers alive.
Tony Khan has now revealed the extent of this ordering frenzy – with Punk selling 100k shirts. Also thousands of ice cream bars. This is in addition to boosting TV ratings, driving ticket sales and more. Whatever AEW is paying CM Punk might honestly not be enough. Names like Kenny Omega, Jon Moxley & Chris Jericho were certainly big for AEW – but Punk is truly someone who moves the needle.
Potentially Changing Long Standing Plans
It’s always felt like the World Heavyweight Championship has been carefully planned in AEW. Chris Jericho as the first champion to legitimize them as a company. Jon Moxley giving fans of AEW a hero to rally behind. Kenny Omega became the Best Bout Machine once again after a rough start. These were the stories of the first three champions, and Hangman Page has always seemed to be next. He has a history with Omega and needs the belt to prove he belongs.
However with the smash success of CM Punk in AEW really changing the game, it could be possible that we see plans change. Hangman Page is a hugely popular name, but when he was a no-show for All Out? Fans didn’t really take notice. His absence didn’t change the show. If CM Punk does the same and misses Full Gear? There will be a dip in buy rates. This alone could influence AEW to give him a go as the one who beats Kenny Omega, as money is what really matters.
