Shane Thorne has had an odd time with his time in WWE. He came in with some hype to NXT, alongside his longtime tag team partner Nick Miller. As members of The Mighty Don’t Kneel, they were a top tag team in Australia and Japan, and would make their way into NXT to do the same. As TM61, they’d fail to claim any championships, and Miller left to return to Australia,
Thorne stuck around, teamed with Brendan Vink (now Duke Hudson), ended up on RAW for a few weeks, and ended up back in NXT alone. He’d join up with Retribution and don the mask of SLAPJACK, where he became an internet favorite jobber. Now, with Retribution dead he’s trying something new… and is now a Crocodile Dundee ripoff?
Shane Throne Doesn’t Seem To Mind
Ahead of Smackdown Live this past week in a dark match, Shane Thorne would be in action. Just looking at results, he’d simply defeat Austin Theory. I’d imagine it was a good match. However the story is more in how Thorne looks now. Wearing a wide brim hat with teeth around the top, an unbuttoned shirt and some tan shorts? He’s basically Crocodile Dundee.
Thorne would seem to be fine about this on Twitter, replying to comments about it with a reminder that he’s always been Australian and that Crocodile Dundee was cool. Hunter gimmicks in wrestling can work, and the look is a decent one. However, it’s hard to see this being a gimmick that gets him championship chances in WWE. It overall feels very 80’s WWE, or like a parody gimmick from mobile game 80’s Mania Wrestling.
It’s yet to be seen if this gimmick will even reach TV. Thorne has been trying to reinvent himself time and time again in WWE, and not every idea will get all the way. You can’t blame him for trying to keep in the conversation especially with how many names have been cut from WWE in 2021 – but will this gimmick work?
