For a while now, Io Shirai has been on the down low in WWE NXT. The former NXT Women’s Champion has been in a forgettable reign as NXT Women’s Tag Team Champion with Zoey Stark, and has barely wrestled since winning the belts off Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell. This heatless run could be the last of Shirai in NXT, as they refocus their roster and the WWE draft looms.
Io Shirai Seems Primed To Lose Her Current Gold
Next week on NXT 2.0, Shirai & Stark will be in action against the tag team of Toxic Attraction members, Gigi Dolin & Jacy Jayne. The titles will be on the line, marking just their second defense in almost three months. Considering Toxic Attraction has been a featured faction over the past few weeks, it’s expected that this match will see the first of NXT 2.0’s new names win gold from established names.
Jayne & Dolin will really be able to benefit from having these championships, unlike Shirai & Stark who have zero chemistry. If they lose, it’s expected that a singles match will break out, giving Shirai one last big singles match on a brand where she was truly a star before the WWE Draft comes around.
A Trading Card Spoils A Smackdown Draft Pick?
In a weird way for something to be potentially spoiled, as one of the upcoming Tops trading cards showed Io Shirai as a member of the Smackdown roster. With the draft so close and WWE having a strong relationship with Tops – it’s not unbelievable that they’d get some information like this. Shirai would fit well onto a show like Smackdown, and a match with Becky Lynch would be huge on a PPV event.
We’re going to be seeing some names called up from NXT 2.0 as new talent flood the roster. Shirai is a natural pick as she doesn’t have much left to do aside from lose to Zoey Stark to boost here. Other expected call ups include LA Knight, Cameron Grimes, Timothy Thatcher, Dakota Kai, Aliyah, and Xia Li.
