Last night fans of WWE NXT got some bad news from now former champion Samoa Joe. While he was successful in defeating Karrion Kross for the NXT Championship, becoming a three time champion in the process – he would suffer an injury in just his first match back. Because of this, the NXT Championship is now vacant for only the third time in its history – but that might not last.
All Four Men In The Planned Fatal Four Way Are Great Champions In The Making
While it’s unclear if WWE planned this or not, they have a perfect way to crown a new champion this Tuesday on the reboot episode of NXT. It’s been heavily promoted by WWE, with a main event that was set to name a new contender for Samoa Joe. Kyle O’Reilly, Pete Dunne, Tommaso Ciampa & LA Knight were set to battle in a Fatal Four Way match, which now could very well be for the vacant championship.
Having a new top champion crowned is a solid way to bring in interest and viewers, so we could expect the show to open with Samoa Joe helping to announce the new stakes in the main event. There would be few who would argue with any of these men as the new NXT Champion. Kyle O’Reilly has been set to reach this level for a while, as was Pete Dunne.
Tommaso Ciampa only lost the belt due to injury, which would make this a sweet moment. He’s been determined to reclaim ‘Goldy” for years now, and is still one of the brands best. LA Knight wouldn’t get a great reception from fans, but would be a great heel champion for the new era of NXT – one who could generate interest as he talked up a storm.
Carmello Hayes Is The Wildcard Pick
This could even turn into a Fatal Five Way, should the winner of the NXT Breakout tournament decide to cash in his title shot. Carmelo Hayes is coming off a loss to Santos Escobar, which saw him body slammed on the outside by the newest member of Legado Del Fantasma, making it a dirty finish. He will be looking for a way to bounce back, and inserting himself into this huge main event and becoming NXT Champion in record time could be a huge way to do so.
It’s still unclear what WWE will do. They could change plans and set up a tournament to crown a new champion, similar to the Gold Rush that named the first champion Seth Rollins back in the day. There are a few options at play here, and while it sucks to see Samoa Joe already injured once again – this isn’t the end of NXT as we know it.
