A couple of weeks ago, WWE fans were irate to see a legend like Jeff Hardy relegated to the 24/7 Championship chase on Raw.
After taking to social media to let their feelings be known, the WWE shows they listen when they want to as the following where Jeff faced Damian Priest and Priest and the announcers couldn’t stop singing his praises.
It continued into last week as Jeff earned a spot in the United States Championship match after he defeated Sheamus amidst reverent praise from the commentators and Priest.
He fell short of wining the US title, but that’s no surprise as Priest is the future and the WWE likes using its older stars to put over younger ones and taking the belt off Priest so soon wouldn’t help Priest at all.
Now, a prolonged feud with Jeff or Sheamus could given they’ve given us awesome matches no matter what.
But will it last?
Placating the fans
The old saying that nothing lasts forever was never truer than in the WWE where things change on the whims of one person, according to multiple reports.
It’s also been reported it’s not particularly what the fans want to see, but rather what Vince McMahon wants to see and hear, which if true explains the deafness the WWE has shown to fans a vast majority of the time.
While fan outrage was enough to help Jeff be given a legitimate push, we can’t help but wonder how long before he floats down to being a jobber again.
It was only a couple of months back when the powers-that-be deemed Jeff needed to cheat in the first couple of minutes to defeat Karrion Kross, and Jeff reportedly testing positive for Covid before then next week seemed to set up his descent to lower mid-card level.
We can’t help shaking the feeling the WWE will feel fans are placated and Jeff will once again be lowered back to the depths of jobberville on Raw or become a fixture on the Main Event.
Fan reaction won’t count
If Jeff will be dropped down the card once again when the WWE desperately needs all the star power it can get, it’ll mean the WWE expects fans to accept the brief shot Jeff had again.
Will it be enough? It may be as long as he’s not in the 24/7 title chase again, but even if he is we doubt fan reaction will matter a second time.
Remember, this is the same company that spent months refusing to give Daniel Bryant a meaningful push despite fans clearly choosing him at the start of his WWE run.
Sure, Jeff’s not starting out but he has a solid fanbase and keeping him in the limelight would be wise for a company searching for ratings every way they can.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens tonight and going forward.
