There’s been plenty of back and forths between AEW and WWE fans the last two years over which one is better, and Bryan Danielson recently explained his views on what’s different about the companies.
Since AEW burst onto the scene, many of us compared it to WCW in its glory days and that still holds true as it has a rebellious feel that’s refreshing.
The in ring action has improved a great deal as it’s not just spot fests anymore and we expect it to continue to grow and improve.
The WWE, on the other hand, has remained more focused on creating moments than memorable matches despite their wrestlers putting on some top notch performances.
But after a million rematches to further the entertainment portion of the storyline, can we really expect anything else?
Interesting comparison
One thing we hadn’t noticed was the difference or amount of matches, and that’s what Danielson commented on when he appeared on 6ABC.

“This is one of the things that drew me to AEW and why I kind of wanted to come to AEW is that AEW is like a wrestling-first company. It’s a wrestling company for wrestling fans. If you’re a wrestling fan, and sometimes WWE is more just based on general entertainment. They wanna reach as many casual viewers as possible. Where I think AEW is like, ‘hey if you love wrestling, here’s this. But also, even if you’re not a wrestling fan we’re putting on wrestling and the wrestling itself is gonna bring you in. I think that’s one of the really unique things about AEW. If you were to do a comparison of the two, like just watching the shows, you’ll see that there’s a lot more wrestling in the two hours of Dynamite than there is even in a three-hour Raw. And sometimes there’s more wrestling on an AEW Dynamite show than there is on Raw and SmackDown combined.”
As we mentioned, we never really compared the two this way, but it wouldn’t surprise us. Especially when Raw or Smackdown often open with a 20 to 30 minute exchange that’s often boring and/or painful.
And given the WWE’s decades long habit of reaching out and having big named celebrities appear on their shows, it makes sense.
AEW isn’t innocent of the celebrity angles, but their shows do have more of an energy about them and flow better at times.
What do you think? Does AEW embrace the wrestling aspect more than WWE? Let us know in the comments below.
