Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has thrown yet another spanner in the works of his comeback by getting himself arrested in Las Vegas. Jones found himself on the wrong side of the law at a resort in Vegas this weekend, and faces charges of battery, domestic violence and injury to/tampering with a vehicle.
Fellow UFC vet and current commentator Michael Bisping posted a video weighing in on the issue, declaring Jones a “good person” but acknowledging that he makes “bad choices”.
Bisping on Jon Jones Arrest: “There’s No Excuse”
“And I’m not here to sh** on Jon Jones. I have tremendous respect for his accomplishments inside the octagon. And most of the time when I’ve spoken to Jon, my interactions have been fantastic.
I saw him just recently in Vegas, and we stopped, and we shared a picture, and we had a laugh, and we spoke for a few minutes.
And I wish him all the best. He’s a good person, but he’s just making some bad choices.” Bisping clarified his statement, declaring that if the charges against Jones are true, and he has indeed struck a woman, such actions are “deplorable”.
“And I don’t know the story. Now, of course, the charge is domestic battery, right? So, that alludes to, unfortunately, you know, maybe assault on a woman.
I will say this; we don’t know the details. But a man, certainly a man like Jon Jones – a large man, and who’s also one of the greatest of all time, if not the GOAT, of mixed martial arts, has absolutely no place hitting a woman. And if that is what happened, then it’s deplorable, and there’s no excuse.
I’ve never done it. I would never dream of putting my hands on another woman. And Jon Jones shouldn’t be doing the same.”
Unfortunately, this is far from Jon Jones’ first run-in with the boys in blue. Jones was last arrested in March 2020, this time for DWI, negligent use of a firearm, possession of an open container, and driving with no proof of insurance.
Arguably his most infamous clash with the law came in 2015, when Jon Jones was convicted of a hit-and-run. He fled the scene of a multi-car crash, which injured a pregnant woman in another vehicle. It was this felony conviction that led the UFC to strip Jon Jones of his title.
Jon Jones is attempting to move up to the heavyweight division and compete with the likes of Ciryl Gane and Francis Ngannou. Whether this most recent arrest will have any effect on his UFC comeback remains to be seen.
