Welcome to more coverage of the G1 Climax 31, where tonight we had more action from the B-Block. This is a block where most of the participants are fighting for scraps while Kazuchika Okada, Jeff Cobb and EVIL remain in the hunt. Even Hiroshi Tanahashi has no chance of making the finals, but will have a chance to halt Cobb in his tracks.
SANADA Has Fallen Hard Since G1 Climax 30
Kicking off the show is Ryohei Oiwa, who tonight has to face Hiromu Takahashi. Feeling like leaving some damage for after the match, Takahashi kept things simple – and threw about 100 hard chops to the chest of Oiwa and tapped him out with a Boston Crab. Oiwa’s chest was blood red by the end.
First piece of tournament action would see Tama Tonga taking on Taichi. They clashed earlier this year in a tag team feud and even a ladder match, but tonight will be a fair fight. Neither man is 100% at this point, but the ribs of Taichi were an easy target throughout this one. Tama Tonga was relentless, and Taichi could barely throw his kicks – making this an easy win with the GunStun.
SANADA went from being in the finals of last year’s G1 to having the same amount of points as YOSHI-HASHI with just three matches left. He had to make tonight count, with double digits still possible. However, YOSHI-HASHI has been no pushover in recent matches, and would fight like hell tonight in a simple but exciting match. SANADA won with a vicious application of Skull End.
Hiroshi Tanahashi Pushes Jeff Cobb To His Limit
Kazuchika Okada had the closest thing you get to a night off in this block, as he took on Chase Owens. Owens got lucky against Hiroshi Tanahashi, but that’s his sole win in this year’s G1 Climax. He’d give a solid showing with some dramatic near falls – but in the end tapped out to The Money Clip. Okada is still on pace for a perfect run.
EVIL is unfortunately in the running, but not due to great tactics like Okada or raw power with Jeff Cobb. He’s barely earned any of his wins, using every dirty trick in the book and the help of Dick Togo in every match. Tonight against Goto it was the same old story, and the crowd is sick of it as well. You could hear crickets when his hand was raised.
Main event time, and Jeff Cobb had his hardest test yet. His tournament is loaded at the back with some serious troubles, and Hiroshi Tanahashi would push him as hard as anyone else this year. The ace would break him down from the left leg, and go for all his big moves. Cobb was milliseconds away from losing at points, but Tour Of The Islands remains an unstoppable finisher.
Who’s Block Is It Anyways?
After tonight’s matches, the scoreboard in the B-Block looks like this.
Jeff Cobb, Kazuchika Okada – 14 Points
EVIL – 12 points
Hiroshi Tanahashi, SANADA – 6 points
Tama Tonga,Taichi , Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI – 4 points
Chase Owens – 2 points
