This Day in Wrestling History (10/28) – Bret Hart Retires

There comes a time in every athlete’s life where they have to step aside and allow the younger generation to take over, unfortunately Bret was forced into retirement on this day in wrestling history.

After an illustrious career, Bret retired a week after he was fired from WCW via a FedEx envelope after the company exercised its inactivity clause.

It was the same clause they used to fire Steve Austin in 1995, and Bret hadn’t wrestled since he took a mule kick from Goldberg at Starrcade ’99.

    Post-Concussion Syndrome and announcement

It set of talk of Goldberg being reckless in the ring and it’s been a bone of contention between them since as Goldberg has done little to dispel that claim, and Bret hasn’t softened his stance.

Bret continued to appear, but it became too much for him and he finally took time off to heal at the behest of his doctor.

The announcement came via Bret Hart’s website brethart.com (https://www.brethart.com/)

“We are never prepared for what we expect.

“It is with deep regret and sadness that I officially announce that my career as a professional wrestler is over…forever. Due to the severity of numerous concussions, I received in late December 1999 and early January 2000 as the reigning WCW World Champion my Doctors have advised me that any physical return to the ring would hold serious consequences for me. So, after great deliberation is has become clear that it is best for me, my family and my fans that I say goodbye. I would like to thank every single wrestler I ever worked with. I wanted to thank my loyal fans all around the world. I owe you all for what I am. I never really worked for an honest wrestling promoter except my Dad who I especially want to thank.

“Wrestling has been my life forever. I have been extremely fortunate in what I have achieved and what I have attained through wrestling. Wrestling will always be in my blood. I sincerely hope that I can impart some of the lessons I have learned to those now involved and to those on the way up. I hope that by doing so, the wrestling business will be a better business for the people that make it happen. The wrestlers.

“Every hero becomes a bore at last.

“Thank you.” – Bret Hitman Hart.

As eloquent and thoughtful as ever, Bret left the sport with the same dignity and respect he brought to it throughout his career.

He did make a brief comeback following his stroke in 2002 by winning the United States Championship in 2010 in the WWE. He also made amends with Shawn Michaels.

Bret may have his flaws, but he’s always tried to rise above them and he was a personal favorite growing up and through the 90s.

This was a sad this day in wrestling history moment for me, but all good things have to come to an end at some point.

    Thank you for everything, Bret.

A child of the 1980s, CP was born to pretend. He loved to create intricate plots based on his favorite shows and professional wrestling. In time, his interests expanded into horror, sci-fi, action, and comedy. His favorite books were Sherlock Holmes, Treasure Island, Dracula, and Star Trek. Never one to do things the easy way, CP refused to learn to read in school, so his dad taught him through comic books. Following along with his dad, CP picked up reading in a couple of weeks. Everything he’s read or has seen has influenced him in some way as he creates his own worlds.
