Over the 11 episodes we have seen of AEW Rampage, there have been some massive matches and moments. CM Punk made his return to professional wrestling, Kenny Omega lost the Impact Wrestling Championship to Christian Cage, and we got to see two incredible matches from Andrade El Idolo & PAC.
It’s become the fastest hour in professional wrestling, and one that fans look forward to despite it’s awkward timeslot of 10PM EST on Friday nights. Due to said awkward timeslot, we almost got a very different type of show from AEW – but Tony Khan wanted none of that.
Tony Khan Wanted The Third Hour On TV To Be Wrestling Focused
While in negotiations to get AEW Rampage on TV, Tony Khan had gotten a pitch to have Rampage have a format similar to that of WWE Backstage. WWE Backstage was a short lived show on Fox which actually included CM Punk, with Mark Henry, Christian Cage, Booker T and Renee Paquette being other names that helped host the news based wrestling program.
It was never a bad watch, but it always had the issue of fans wondering what the point of the show was, and who it was for. Tony Khan was not a fan, and while speaking with Gavin Bridge at Monaco Streaming Film Festival, he’d reveal that something similar was pitched for Rampage.
“They said, ‘Would you do this as part of the third hour?’ And I said, ‘No, it’s going to be wrestling.’ I have a different format for it and that’s where Mark Henry does interviews. There is that talk show competent where they talk before they wrestle. That is a little bit of a twist on the format, but it’s not, ‘Let’s look back on the week in wrestling’ and have a cup of coffee together, which I think is not a good format for a TV show.”
