Last night we saw an incredibly chaotic episode of NXT 2.0. The show closed out with an excellent match between Santos Escobar & Isaiah “Swerve” Scott over the NXT North American Championship. Swerve would get some help from Carmello Hayes & Trick Williams after Legado Del Fantasma came to ringside – and successfully defended this championship. After the bell however – Hayes would lay Swerve out and cash in his contract to become the new champion.
Carmelo Hayes Used The Breakout Tournament Contract Like Money In The Bank
This all seems fairly simple – he is able to become a champion with ease, but the method he used has some fans scratching his head. Last time we saw the NXT Breakout Tournament, the winner Jordan Myles used his shot to set up a match against Adam Cole a week in advance. However, now we see that that contract can be used in the same manner as Money in the Bank.
Hayes could have waited for Halloween Havoc where Tommaso Ciampa takes on Bron Breakker. They will almost certainly tear each other apart – allowing him to swoop in and take the NXT Championship. Yet he used it on the NXT North American championship, which has been viewed as the midcard belt on the roster. However, it wasn’t about the title.
No One Tells Hayes What To Do Anymore
Back in August when discussing his options to become champion, Carmelo Hayes was confronted by Santos Escobar & Legado Del Fantasma upon mentioning the NXT North American Championship as an option. Escobar claimed that the belt was his, and if Hayes didn’t look elsewhere he’d feel the pain. This led to Hayes picking a fight with Escobar, which he lost.
Next time we saw Hayes in action, Trick Williams was there and bringing out the true side of Hayes to the mix. Now with backup and attitude – he got his revenge on Santos Escobar. He not only prevented him from taking it off of Swerve, but claimed it for his own. The one thing Escobar coveted on the brand, which he fought Hayes over just mentioning? Now Hayes owns it.
This is a solid example of storytelling, which does require some reading between the lines. Do you think Hayes made the right choice? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
