A decision has been reached in the legal battle between former House of Cards lead Kevin Spacey and show producer MRC.
Kevin Spacey Will Be Out Almost $31 Million for Sexual Misconduct
The legal battle between the two sides has resulted in Spacey (62) having to pay roughly $31 million as a result of sexual misconduct involving the groping of a production assistant.
House of Cards Producer MRC Files For $31 Award Million Confirmation Against Kevin Spacey
During the time of the 2017 accusations, House of Cards was looking at the sixth season but because of the accusations against Kevin Spacey, it was shorted to eight episodes from its usual thirteen, and Spacey’s character Frank Underwood was killed off.
Following an internal investigation, MRC scrapped the actor’s contracts due to continuously breaching the terms of said contract. Spacey and MRC went to JAMS—Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services—to argue the situation and things went in MRC’s favor on October 19.
The decision was on the weight of MRC’s terms being reasonable for Spacey to keep his contract in the first place. On top of that, JAMS found that Spacey’s actions and the resulting backlash interfered with MRC’s production of the show resulting in the final season being cut short and MRC losing money.
Spacey’s argument was that the statute of limitations meant that what he did in the early seasons of House of Cards shouldn’t have interfered with his then-current contract. Actually, he felt that it was both Netflix and MRC’s decision to end the contract and that he was owed money.
Obviously, that didn’t fly with JAMS. Now, MRC has filed with JAMS again to confirm that the $31 million award is paid.
Previous Accusations Were the Beginning of a Rough Road for Spacey
The accusations began in late October 2017 when Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp came forward about an intoxicated Spacey making unwanted advances towards him in 1986. For perspective, Rapp was 14-years-old while Spacey was 26.
Spacey’s name wasn’t mentioned in the accusation to avoid outing the award-winning actor. Kevin Spacey would come out that same day and it did not sit well with known gay and lesbian actors in the industry who felt it was a tactic to deflect from the accusation.
That accusation opened the door for other accusations about the actor including from a production assistant on House of Cards. Following the accusations and removal from House of Cards, Spacey was out of the stage and screen mix for a while before being taking a role in The Man Who Drew God, which finished up filming in July 2021.
Prior to this, he took on a role in the 2018 release Billionaire Boys Club which had been produced between 2015 and 2016.
