Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have scored a victory over the BBC after an episode of their documentary ‘The Princes and The Press’ was rebranded as ‘Sussexit.’
Prince Harry May Have Influenced The BBC To Drop The Term ‘Megxit’
Harry, for his part, had recently stated that the use of the term ‘Megxit’ was a form of misogyny. This term, which signified their departure from the Royal family, became a source of contention when Harry addressed the role of media propaganda.
During the event, he had stated the following: “Maybe people know this, and maybe they don’t, but the term Megxit was or is a misogynistic term.
“It was created by a troll, amplified by royal correspondents, and it grew and grew and grew into mainstream media. But it began with a troll.” Given that the BBC decided to drop the use of this term, it showed that Harry’s words did have some influence.
In addition, the BBC has been under pressure over how they conduct journalism, as shown by Princess Diana’s interview with Martin Bashir on the BBC, which was blasted after Martin was accused of using fake documents as part of the process.
It is not clear whether the BBC had contacted someone on Harry and Meghan’s team, or whether they had made the decision unilaterally. Regardless of the motivation, it showed that Harry still has political clout despite his departure from the Royal family.
However, this could be seen as a move from the BBC to move towards an impartial view of reporting, which it has so often been accused of abandoning in the past when it comes to covering the Royal family.
In a prior statement issued by the BBC concerning this documentary, a spokesman remarked: “[The documentary was] about how royal journalism is done and features a range of journalists from broadcast and the newspaper industry.”
Harry and Meghan may have gotten the upper-hand here, but there is still a long way to go before they are fully accepted back into the UK press following their conduct since their Royal departure.
But for now, it is safe to say that this will be the last time we hear about Megxit. Let us know what you think in the comment section down below. Remember to stay up to date with the latest news on TheOvertimer. Don’t forget to visit Screenstinger for great videos, news, and gameplay!
