Ric Flair Intends to Regain “The Man” Legally From WWE

It looks like Nick Kahn kicked over a beehive of sorts by reportedly pulling Ric Flair’s image from the opening of their show and allegedly tainting his legacy.

During last week’s Whooooo Nation Uncensored Podcast, Ric Flair talked about various topics with several surrounding his latest break with the WWE.

We explained how he owns all of his trademarks, including the “WHOOO!” they removed from the opening of their shows.

    The Man

Previously, there was a small discussion about whether Becky Lynch and the WWE owned the rights to her “The Man” nickname during her Raw Women’s title run.

Flair said then that he owns the moniker, and he reiterated that on his podcast. Special thanks to amp.wrestlinginc.com for the following transcript.

“I owned the trademark ‘To Be the Man,’ if I own that trademark and then they use that trademark to create ‘The Man’ [Becky Lynch], which has been my label my entire career,” Flair said. “I thought it up, it’s mine and I own it and I’m one of the few guys that own my intellectual property. Steve doesn’t own Stone Cold, believe it or not, I don’t think it’s right and he should have it but when they get a hold of it, they’re going to keep it. They have their reasons and I’m not the one making those calls. I own my stuff.”

He made some great points and it’s something we often overlook when we see a wrestler leave the WWE and change their name, finisher, catchphrase, and so on.

The WWE often owns those and the talent either has to buy them back or come up with something new, which means many times they start over from scratch. And if they use the trademarked names, then the WWE gets a little something for it.

Flair continued and said that if he gets a chance, he’d like to legally clarify any disputes over “The Man” usage. This included an interesting conversation with Triple H about the nickname and trademark.

“Hunter told me that Stone Cold is trademarked. I said, ‘Why don’t you call her The Game?’ He said that’s trademarked too. I said, ‘So is The Man?’ He said, ‘No it’s not, To Be the Man and The Man are two different things,” Flair said. “Please. It’s old news now, it’s behind us but let’s get the facts straight, they still don’t own it. And if I get a chance and I get cleared legally, I’m going to go back and get it.”

This should be interesting to see how it plays out going forward now that Flair isn’t giving the WWE any quarter. Do you think he’ll get the trademark or will the WWE add it to their long list?
