When it comes to retirement matches in professional wrestling, you can’t do much better than the match between Ric Flair & Shawn Micheals from Wrestlemania 23. Ric Flair got to quit while he was ahead, and had a chance to end his career on a major note. Alongside Micheals he would put on a classic performance, which was capped off by perhaps the most iconic Sweet Chin Music of all time.
However, this wouldn’t stick – and Flair was soon wrestling with Impact Wrestling. As of right now, his final match was against longtime rival Sting in 2011. The final match of Ric Flair almost changed again, as he was offered big money for a match against Sammy Guevara.
The Lure Of One More Match Doesn’t Evade Even Ric Flair
Flair would discuss this on his podcast titled “Ric Flair Wooooo Nation Uncensored” alongside co-host Mark Madden. While discussing the legacy of Flair in professional wrestling, Madden would mention that even at 72 – Flair still has the lure of ‘One More Match” in his head. Flair would respond with the following quick story.
“Yea. listen. It’s funny you brought that up because there’s a promoter in Israel that wants me to wrestle your buddy, Sammy Guevara in Israel. I said, ‘$100,000 and two first class tickets and I’m there. 50% and 50 % after I beat Sammy.”
Obviously this never came to be. As long as Flair is still walking and talking – it will remain an option, provided someone would want to pay for it.
Imagining The Match With Sammy Guevara
Now, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine this match working. Guevara during his time on AEW programming has proven that he is as adaptive as wrestlers get. He is able to work with any opponent. He’s a workhorse type of wrestler, able to do most of the work. Flair would really just need to hit some chops, walk some struts, hit a chop block and apply the Figure Four Leg Lock.
Guevara would just need to sell this offense, and kept things simple on his side as to not injure Flair. It’s not an impossible match to book, but it wouldn’t be a classic by any means. However, with smart planning – nothing is impossible.
