Any time we close in on the end of the year, the rumor mill kicks into overdrive from special WrestleMania main events. In the case of current WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, those rumors have often included his cousin Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Dwayne Johnson Discusses Potential Match Against Roman Reigns
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Dwayne Johnson was asked if he would defend the championship if he was to win it. “I don’t know if I have another title run, considering I’m the People’s Champion,” The Rock answered. “But I don’t know if it’s another title run.”
While discussing the WWE Universal Champion, Johnson discussed his relationship with his cousin and how he encourages him to keep improving in-ring and on the mic. He feels that Roman Reigns has not only done both but he is excelling in his role at the top.
“And that’s always the best part—I think—about that world of professional wrestling is that when someone gets anointed and given the ball to run, they either score a touchdown with it or they don’t,” he explained.
Johnson noted that sometimes, not only do some stars manage to score a touchdown but “then they begin to change the way the game is played.” He added that Roman Reigns “is slowly doing that, and you could start to read the tea leaves. And again, I’m very, very proud of him. I like everything that he’s doing. I like everything that the Usos are doing. I like what they’re doing together, and we’ll see down the road.”
Sooooo…Are We Getting Roman vs. The Rock?
So, there are two things here. He didn’t totally rule out another match in WWE nor did he rule out a match with Roman Reigns. However, things are extremely hazy on a title run.
First off, the man is extremely busy with filming and promotion of those movies—including Red Notice which just had a theater release and will be hitting Netflix this weekend.
To get that WrestleMania showdown would require one or two months at the minimum. WWE rarely does video game-style “There’s a secret challenger!” bouts for its biggest show of the year. The biggest giveaway is when they pop up at Royal Rumble in the big Royal Rumble match. That’s the start of WWE’s “Road to WrestleMania” formula.
These kinds of bouts require some build-up and even if the build-up was done, it would be missing a bit of magic that would make it special as there would be no way for WWE to keep it under wraps.
Some would call The Rock vs. Roman Reigns a dream match but one of the criteria for a dream match is that the chance of it happening floats between never happening and an extremely low chance.
It wouldn’t even be a torch-passing match. Reigns has collected so many torches that he could burn down WWE HQ if he tripped in the hall. However, you can never have too many WrestleMania moments.
The Forecast
Don’t expect him at Royal Rumble. I mean, if he’s in it he’s going to win it and he will go on to WrestleMania. However, he’s supposed to be shooting the next film in the Jumanji franchise.
Plus, that would mean some peak-predictable booking from WWE since they would want some sort of stake to get Roman Reigns vs. The Rock. I mean, the company could just do the match but everyone wouldn’t be happy with a “There, we gave you the match now stop begging for stuff” match up.
Royal Rumble Chances: 0%
Unless the next Jumanji or Black Adam are being released in mid-March and early-April 2022, don’t expect Dwayne Johnson in a WWE ring. Promoting his upcoming films is the best way to get him in the mix of things without eating into his schedule for a long stretch.
WrestleMania Chances: 25%
Defending the title after defeating Roman Reigns is out of the question. He’ll probably relinquish it if he won which would just circle back to WWE being less predictable and giving Roman a challenge who could unseat him before WM—meaning that WWE could just give fans the match with nothing extra on it.
Even more interesting is the potential of having Johnson come in to lose against Reigns when he’s starring in an upcoming blockbuster.
The Rock Losing at WrestleMania: 25%
