Social media platform TikTok has come under increasing pressure with reports emerging that terrorist organisation Islamic State (ISIS) is using the platform in order to recruit new members.
TikTok Criticised With Reports Suggesting ISIS Are Recruiting From it- ‘That App Needs To Be Taken Down ASAP’
The primary source of concern is that these videos will end up targeting the youth and inciting hatred against other groups. As such, there is a feeling that the platform needs to do more over handling the content that it allows users to share.
This is something that TikTok has come under fire for previously, with people being dissatisfied with the way in which their guidelines are often implemented.
According to reports, one video about Christmas had said the following: “They do not believe in Allah [God], and they make fun of the sacred. They are Shaytan [Devil] slaves.
“Enter the crowds disguised in their clothes. [Then] explode it [bomb] and plant panic and terror in their hearts.”
Naturally, an investigation was launched by the platform to try to crack down on this issue. It is alleged that there were numerous accounts that were found which were deemed to be inciting hatred.
And with the pandemic already having a strain on the way that the younger generation is feeling, there is a worry that they could become victims of exploitation on such social media platforms.
The response on social media was one of huge concern. As such, some people even suggested that there needs to be massive reform on the way that social media companies operate.
And yet, there is always the feeling that freedom to navigate the internet must be protected. It is a fine line to balance, but for some people, the choice is already clear.
One person on Twitter wrote: “That app needs to be taken down. ASAP.” TikTok has not issued a public statement in response, but it is clear that steps are being taken to prevent this from happening again.
And if this is to be rooted out, then there have to be some severe repercussions for users who engage in uploading such content. After all, these videos could easily end up leading to people getting harmed.
