Colby Covington feels like a kid on Christmas Eve ahead of his rematch with Kamaru Usman. He told TMZ Sports that it’s exactly what he’s wanted all along, and exactly what the fans want to boot.
“Man, I feel like a little kid before Christmas. I’m so excited I finally got what I’ve been begging for and what I earned.
Colby Covington “Feels Like a Little Kid Before Christmas” Leading Up to Usman Rematch
Most people want to say that this fight wasn’t competitive the first time we fought. Man, I beat him multiple rounds. He had to take multiple fouls and multiple timeouts. I kicked him in the liver and they called it a nut shot.
I had him on the wobbly street with the high kick and he’s faking the eye poke on the right eye when it barely grazed his left eye so we know he’s a terrible actor.”
In their last fight, contesting the UFC welterweight championship, Usman defeated Covington via a brutal fifth-round TKO. In the earlier rounds, the referee intervened due to inadvertent eye pokes and groin shots that Covington inflicted on Usman. Although the fight was close, most people who aren’t Colby Covington feel that Usman won fair and square.
In the intervening years, Kamaru Usman maintained his winning streak, stringing together back-to-back title defenses against the likes of Jorge Masvidal and Gilbert Burns. Colby Covington defeated former champ Tyron Woodley via TKO, and feels that he has developed significantly since that fight.
Both Usman and Covington were, at the time of their last fight, best known for their American-style wrestling ability. However, when they faced off for the welterweight championship, the fight remained largely on the feet, with the pair exchanging devastating strikes over the course of five rounds. This development in striking continued for both fighters, with Usman eventually knocking out Jorge Masvidal in his most recent title defense.
Colby Covington loves the fact that they’ve developed, and looks forward to upsetting the welterweight division with an undoubtable victory.
“The great thing is that’s in that past now. Now we get to see the evolution of our games. It’s been two years since we first fought. He’s at a new camp, I’m at a new camp. I have great new energy around me, great coaches.
I just know this is my destiny. I will be the UFC undisputed champion, only on pay-per-view from the mecca, Madison Square Garden, on November 6.”
