The UFC’s bantamweight division is currently one of the most intriguing on the roster. Amidst the furore around the title, with Aljamain Sterling and Petr Yan both laying claim to the belt, there’s also a former champion in TJ Dillashaw in the mix, which is to say nothing of former featherweight champ Jose Aldo.
Aldo will fight Rob Font at UFC Vegas 44 on December 4, and Font told Just Scrap Radio that he believes he’ll be going to war with a “legend” in Jose Aldo.
Rob Font Promises “War” on “Legend” Jose Aldo
“It’s huge, another main event in Vegas, I love Vegas. It’s another big name, a legend, a former champ, basically a Hall of Famer. This is a big fight, big name, and another main event so I’m blessed to have this opportunity.
I plan on keeping it standing and making him shoot. Force him to take bad shots, then get on top of him and make him pay.
I believe it will be a standup war for him… [Getting the jab going] will basically be the whole gameplan, as well. If I can get my jab on him, keep him at the range, and not let him dictate the pace or the leg kicks, and line myself up for the right hand. The jab will be a key point in this fight.”
Rob Font is confident in his ability to grind out a result over the former champion over the course of five rounds. However, he knows that a highlight-reel-worthy finish will boost his chances of entering the bantamweight title conversation.
“The plan is to be accurate, wear him down, and not to force anything. I know I can go five rounds, so if I can just pick him apart and win a decision, I’m cool with that as well… I’m trying to finish it and make it exciting anyway.”
Of course, with the bantamweight title conversation tied up with the Yan/Sterling controversy, and TJ Dillashaw, Cory Sandhagen, and Jose Aldo ready to pounce as soon as possible, Font knows he might still be a few fights away from the belt. Regardless, a win over Jose Aldo certainly puts Rob Font’s name in the conversation.
“I’m in a weird spot. Even a big win over him I’m still a win away. Obviously, you will never know how things play out with injures and all that.
But, a win over Aldo keeps me out there, but you still got TJ, the whole Sterling-Yan situation. I’m thinking I’ll need one more.” Do you think Rob Font can earn a title shot with a win over Jose Aldo? Let us know in the comments.
