Right now, Ring of Honor is shut down until April 2022. Following Final Battle: End of An Era, we’d see Jonathan Gresham holding the original ROH World Championship. He promised to bring it back to the level it was back when the likes of Bryan Danielson held it. Gresham wants the ROH World Championship to once again show that the holder is the best wrestler in the world. To do this, he is going to be wrestling a wide variety of opponents – both new and old.
Jonathan Gresham Already Has Three Defenses Set Up
Currently, Gresham has already been booked for three defenses. At GCW: WLRD ON GCW from Hammerstein Ballroom, he defends against Blake Christian, who was briefly in WWE as Trey Baxter. Then at Impact Wrestling: Hard To Kill, he takes on Chris Sabin – which could be the best match to come from a stacked show. However, these are opponents you’d expect. Rising stars, and well respected veterans who have made their way through ROH.
On January 15th, he takes on a man who many don’t realize is still active – as he defends the ROH World Championship against none other than 2 Cold Scorpio. At 56 years old, this ECW legend is still lacing up his boots, and his style remains as flashy as it was in the 90’s. This isn’t the weirdest defense of the belt, which still goes to Bryan Danielson defending against Kamala.
A Tale Of Two ROH World Championships
The really interesting bit is that right now, we technically have two ROH World Champions. Jonathan Gresham was supposed to face Bandido at Final Battle, but Bandido was taken off the show due to COVID-19. Bandido was never stripped of his belt, and will actually defend it soon against Baron Black.
This means two of the top names on the indies are carrying around the top prize of ROH, which is more traction than this belt has carried in years. If ROH is able to return in April of 2022, Bandido vs. Gresham is going to be a huge main event – but time will tell if that show will even come.
