When it comes to names in the history of NXT, Jeet Rama has a unique little bit of history to himself. Being signed to WWE in 2015, it would take him 6 years to make his television debut – and he’d get right into the mix with AJ Styles during it. Sadly, that was the peak of WWE’s push into the Indian market, with names like Rama having since been released from the company. Now with nothing to lose, Rama has opened up about how his countrymen are portrayed in WWE.
Jeet Rama Sees An Issue With Indian Talents Always Being The Heel In WWE
While speaking with SportsKeeda, Rama would have the following to say about how Indian talents are portrayed in WWE.
“WWE is a business at the end of the day. I can’t tell them to make business decisions around me. They are doing what they think is right from a business perspective. But why is it that you take any Indian WWE wrestler…why are they always made heels?
Why are we only presented as villains? Why do they have to behave in such a manner that the audience there insults them and boos them? My soul couldn’t come to peace with the fact that I was making money by misrepresenting my country.
When I wrestled at a WWE Live Event a few years ago in Delhi, I saw that the Indian audience was booing Jinder Mahal. Isn’t there something seriously wrong if your home audience isn’t cheering for Jinder Mahal? At some level we as Indians have to compromise when we go to WWE. This is the weakness I want to eliminate.”
Leaving Money On The Table
Right now, it’s hard to deny that India is a country with a large WWE fanbase. Having a major babyface would certainly help to grow the market there more than a heel WWE Champion ever will. People want to see people from their country shown in a positive light. WWE has a global audience – but they still heavily just focus on their American & UK talents.
They have a good chance to do just this with Guru Raaj. While he did get squashed by Harland last week on NXT 2.0, a promising showing against Finn Balor earlier in 2021 showed his high flying skills. If refined in the WWE PC, we would finally have the Indian Babyface that fans deserve to see.
