One of the biggest stories to emerge over the past few days was that of the contract status of Johnny Gargano in WWE. Since 2015, Gargano has been a mainstay of their NXT brand – main eventing and stealing the show at countless NXT Takeover events. With Sami Zayn gone, Johnny Gargano was the heart and soul of NXT. However, all good things come to an end – and as of midnight? Johnny Gargano will be a free agent.
Johnny Gargano Finishes With WWE
Over the past few weeks, WWE has made a few attempts to have Gargano stick around. After his work in The Way, he had the full support of Vince McMahon and other top brass. This boded well for his future if he signed a new deal. However, all he would sign was an extension which allowed him to work his first WarGames match – and have a tearful sendoff on the following episode of NXT 2.0.
The door was left open, as Grayson Waller beat him down to close out the show – leaving a feud for Gargano if he signed the new deal offered to him by WWE. However, it’s now been reported by Sean Ross Sap of Fightful.com that he refused that offer. Gargano will now become a free agent. This isn’t a release, and Gargano could show up anywhere he wants immediately.
BOLA & Winter Is Coming Are Right Around The Corner
Now, this leaves some big chances for Gargano. Right now, the field for the annual Pro Wrestling Guerilla tournament “Battle Of Los Angeles” is being announced, with names like Lio Rush and JONAH in the mix. Gargano would fight right back into the mix there, and add some more hype to the tournament.
There is also a big AEW event coming with Winter Is Coming, which had a big debut last year with the arrival of Sting in AEW. Gargano showing up would be huge, and it’s likely an offer will be made to him from Tony Khan. Right now, he’s also focused on becoming a dad in February – which could delay any major debuts like AEW.
