Beleaguered welterweight Kevin Lee was just released from his UFC contract following a drug-related suspension. Although his positive test for Adderall came from medication Lee was taking to manage his adult ADHD, it seems that wasn’t quite enough for the fighter to maintain his UFC contract.
On The MMA Hour, Lee claimed that this was “one of the worst mistakes” the organization could have made, and detailed his experience at the hands of the UFC.
Kevin Lee, Just Released From UFC Contract: “they just made one of the worst mistakes”
“Why would I want to work with somebody who’s gonna disrespect me like that? It’s crazy. That’s the only thing we fight for in this game.
My only goal and objective right now is to show that they just made one of the worst mistakes that they did. And, you know, I’ll be a millionaire within a year or so. That’s pretty fun.”
Lee also discussed the “disrespect” he faced from the organization while fighting, and eventually over the course of his release. The UFC failed to pay Lee the courtesy of a phone call, he said.
“That was kind of the worst part about it.
Didn’t really have the proper notice or even get a phone call about it. Honestly, that’s what pisses me off the most, the lack of respect.
That’s the main thing that kind of pisses me off about this. When we’re in the UFC, that’s really all you’re fighting for, is your respect.
People respect you for being a UFC fighter. When they hear the name, they automatically give you some kind of respect. We’re not doing it really for the money. It ain’t a whole lot of fame in this sh*t.
It’s like, OK, I’ve done all this sh*t for y’all. I’ve put my body on the line just to end up with an alcohol problem and some tax problems. And at the end of the day, you take my respect away from me, too? It’s like, OK, well then, sh*t.”
Lee claims to be in touch with several organizations already, including upstart streamers Triller. Kevin Lee’s status as a free agent in the combat sports world may prove to be lucrative, and his days fighting for the UFC may well be behind him if he can find a better payday elsewhere.
“I’m a prize fighter. So at the end of the day, I’m gonna go to whoever pays me the most.” Do you think Kevin Lee has a future outside the UFC? Let us know in the comments.
