Tomorrow evening could be the final time fans see a new show from Ring Of Honor. In early 2022, they will shut down for three months as they restructure the company. The hope is to return as a super-indy, no longer relying on big money contracts to keep their talent around. However, their future is uncertain – making Final Battle an apt name for this last show. The main event was set to be Jonathan Gresham vs. Bandido for the ROH World Championship – but life had other plans.
Bandido Tests Positive For COVID-19, Tony Khan To Lend Support
The current ROH World Champion is Bandido, who defeated RUSH for it a few months back. His reign has been alright, mainly bogged down by ROH insisting on running TV tapings without fans. However, he won’t even get the chance to show his skills on Final Battle. He would test positive for COVID-19 just ahead of this event, and therefore the main event needed some last minute changes.
While ROH still has a lot of talent on their roster, they would get help from AEW owner Tony Khan. He wanted to ensure they had the best show possible, stating the following on Busted Open Radio earlier today.
“I do want to wish those folks with Ring Of Honor the best. I’ll be doing some things to support them in this last show to make it a good show for them. Working partnerships is what AEW is all about, so I am wishing them the best tomorrow and tonight, I think you’re going to see some of the best wrestling that you’re ever going to get on a Friday night. We’ve packed so much great stuff into one hour on Rampage, and then we’ll be really focused ahead towards Winter Is Coming, but yeah, over the weekend I am going to lend some support to them and try and help them out because it’s the right thing to do.”
Jay Lethal On Final Battle Feels Just Right
When it comes to ex-ROH talent in AEW, there is a lot to pick from. You have names like Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, Adam Cole, The Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes, Bobby Fish, QT Marshall, and more. Right now, they have sent Jay Lethal back to face his Foundation partner in Jonathan Gresham.
Lethal signed with AEW after Full Gear 2021, and wanted to put ROH in his rearview – but it wasn’t to be. He was the franchise player of ROH for years, and Final Battle wouldn’t have felt the same without him. This match between Gresham & Lethal is just being billed as the co-main event, meaning something else big could be coming.
