Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso, two generational stars, are now the Undisputed WWE Tag Champions after defeating The Judgment Day at Fastlane. Following the match, Cody and Jey made news for appearing to be a bit drunk in celebrating the win. One question that was interesting concerned his future with WWE.
Cody Rhodes Isn’t Looking to Train Wrestlers in Promos but Feels Mick Foley Is a Great Pick to Do So
Rhodes noted that he really had no plans to do so—and with good reason. It’s not the talent or the roster a whole is awful, but Cody Rhodes is 38. He’s likely thought about retirement but who knows it he actually considered doing work while in retirement. The reporter was assigning work and that’s never it.
However, being as media savvy as he is, The American Nightmare answered the question and explained who a good pick would be: Mick Foley.
Cody Rhodes said:
“I don’t think that’s in the card for me. But here’s the thing, I have probably told you guys a bazillion things and somehow ended up in that exact spot. So, I don’t know. Dusty taught communication. He taught promos, he called it communication. No one really filled that spot, after he left. I always thought somebody like a Mick Foley would fill that spot.”
Honestly, it’s great pick because Foley has done mic work in multiple decades—primarily when infusing a gimmick into the promos was crucial to getting the gimmick and the story over. Foley wrestled in a time when characters were gimmicks and not when the gimmick was just the wrestler’s personality or demeanor. He knows character work! Cody Rhodes finished that point with:
“Somebody who’s been there, who did it. But I am not going to teach them anything. I’m going to be there with them and just enjoy it and have a little fun, it’s outside my comfort zone. I’m genuinely terrified…We’re in a crazy time for our industry. I’m excited for my announcement and being able to bring that to the NXT Universe, and Sports Entertainment fans, and wrestling fans.”
Who do you believe would be a good promo coach down in NXT? What wrestler do you see producing the next generation microphone wizards in WWE? Let us know in the comments!
