It was clear that the Royal speech was going to be focused heavily on Prince Philip. After all, this was the first time that the Queen was spending Christmas without her late husband, who died at the age of 99.
Although the message placed a huge emphasis on solidarity and family at a time when the pandemic has disrupted people from spending time with their family, the failure to mention Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also generated some talking points.
In her speech, the Queen went on to say the following: “And for me and my family, even with one familiar laugh missing this year, there will be joy in Christmas.’’
This was immediately picked up on social media, as certain people began to point out that Queen Elizabeth’s comments were taken to mean her family other than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
If this is taken to be true, then it may explain why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had decided to spend Christmas outside of the Royal family – if Queen Elizabeth even wanted them with her!
There were initial rumours that the pair would be visiting the UK in order to lend their hand to the Queen, who had been suffering from various health problems.
In addition, others began to notice that the Queen also failed to mention her son Prince Andrew. The latter is being subjected to sexual assault allegations with a trial set to go ahead in the New Year.
And with the speech having been concluded, fans started to express their views. One person on Twitter wrote: “No mention of the favourite son, who we’re bailing out to the tune of 10s of millions in legal fees.
“Don’t think it’s going away because the British news and press choose not to report anything.” Regardless of the criticism that has been emerging from not mentioning her whole family, it is important to remember that Queen Elizabeth is not getting any younger.
