Few would argue that right now, Roman Reigns is the top name in WWE. Big E is the other top champion, but is still settling into that role – while Reigns has ruled Smackdown Live for over a year. However, when you look at professional wrestling as a whole – this is no longer enough to be considered number one.
WWE Are Slipping In Ticket Sales, Fan Interest, and Ratings
Right now, WWE is not looking great in terms of their spot as the #1 promotion in the United States. They’re having issues moving tickets, keeping their fans interested, and TV ratings are always slipping putting major TV deals with Fox & USA at risk.
Ticket sales are best represented by WWE failing to sell out UBS Arena for Monday Night RAW. WWE were able to move about 5,887 tickets – while AEW has nearly doubled that with their coming episode of Dynamite – with 8,782 tickets moved a week ahead of the event.
AEW has also taken a lot of fan interest, simply giving more fresh names, storylines, and some impressive spots like a superplex through a burning table. Ratings are a constant up and down with WWE, but were down for the post-Survivor Series episode of Monday Night RAW. Historically – post PPV TV usually brings more interest instead of less. This is not even mentioning talent leaving constantly, through both releases and simply getting out as soon as their deals end.
Roman Reigns Fails To Rank Above Other Top Champions
WWE as a whole is slipping, and so is their top star in the eyes of wrestling fans. News of him wanting to move onto Hollywood soon did nothing to help that perception. Appearances on The Tonight Show really do little to bring in fans, as shown by the middling numbers that followed Survivor Series.
Taking a look at the Pro Wrestling Illustrated weekly rankings, Reigns is ranked as the #4 heavyweight in the world. This puts him below AEW’s Hangman Page, Big E, and NJPW’s Shingo Takagi. It’s worth noting that Shingo has only done commentary recently, and still ranks above Roman Reigns.
