Colton Underwood has spoken on how he may not have decided to come out as gay had he not been through a turbulent relationship with his ex Cassie Randolph.

Colton, for his part, had been going through a relationship that was clearly not going to work given what we now know: that he is attracted to men. But for Colton, he felt that he needed to go through this struggle to come out the other side.
During an interview with Us Weekly, he said: “I think that was sort of a huge wake-up call… [It] affecting other people in my life was sort of the moment that I realized I had to come out.”
It is no surprise then, that within approximately a year after their break up, that Colton decided to reveal he was gay. His whole life had completely transformed, where he had nothing to lose.
Subsequently, he spoke on how he had to reevaluate things within his life to make sure that he was not going to enter a similar headspace once again.
And yet, that was just half of it. Their time together ended up with Cassie filing a restraining order against Colton on the grounds that she did not feel safe. Although she would go on to withdraw it, the duo have never seen eye to eye ever since.
That is why Colton has learnt a huge amount from that experience. He added: “I do think that that [restraining order] moment was a realization, like, ‘What are you doing with your life? This is not who you are.
“I wasn’t being true to who I was, and I wasn’t in a really good place.” And as a way to move on from that, Colton’s new Netflix series about his coming out journey will aim to shed light on exactly the type of person that he can be.
His following comments confirmed as much: “I felt like it was important for me to…really own who I am and say, ‘Hey, this is actually who I am.’ And for the first time, I’m going to let people truly see that.”
