A TikTok video has gone viral after a black woman had been in the presence of a co-worker that had used the term ‘porch monkeys’ in relation to a team name.

The black woman in question, Jess (@curlyjess), had decided to post the following video. In the footage here, we can see that another person is heard saying “Porch monkeys?” to which Jess responds by stating: “I was gonna say no to porch monkeys because it’s a racial slur.”
The response by her colleagues was one of surprise, which forced Jess to clarify why such comments could be deemed racist. This was for the following reasons. First of all, Jessie claimed that her co-workers knew that such a term was offensive.
Thus by going ahead with it, they were endorsing racist views which should not have been tolerated in the workplace. Secondly, she argued that the person who had made the statement should have to suffer a consequence as a result.
Rather than having a disciplinary hearing or a fine, the woman called for there to be an ultimate punishment by having the worker’s contract terminated. And yet, Jessie was outraged by the fact that she was the main one objecting to such behaviour.
In a statement in response, Jessie remarked: “We were trying to come up with names and my co-worker who’s old and southern suggested porch monkeys and came up with some excuse as to why but it had no relation to our company and what we do.
“No one objected.” It is not clear yet whether there is going to be further action taken, but what this does show is that there is a fine line between what is regarded as politically correct.
Just as cancel culture has plagued the entertainment industry, this has also trickled down at a worker’s level too. As of now, there has been no response from the person who made that statement.
But rest assured, there is a chance that an investigation will be held in the hope of a resolution being formed. Time will tell how it all plays out.
