Maxwell Jacob Friedman burst onto the scene when AEW started and quickly established himself as the top heel in the industry, and now it looks like he’s in high demand.
There are several reports that FOX and USA networks are pressuring the WWE to made it a priority to sign MJF in 2024 when his AEW contract ends.
Given there are also reports that the WWE is interested in signing him anyway makes this an interesting prospect given their self imposed limitations on who they bring into NXT.
We have serious doubts the WWE will put anyone on the main roster unless they had them there before, and since they passed on MJF during his Tough Enough entrance attempt this should be interesting.
It’ll be a chance for them to correct a previous wrong, but there could be another issue with it.
MJF is stale
I hate to say this, but since he turned on Cody in the early days of AEW he’s stayed the same.
Almost exactly the same.
While he’s had some great moments with Chris Jericho and others, his character hasn’t grown. At least, that’s the feeling I get. Part of it may be that he doesn’t hold any titles beside his ring that only he cares about.
MJF has been built up as a mastermind while somehow remaining in the mid-card range and that’s hurting him more than anything.
Because of that, the WWE may feel like they can better use his talents and they may be right. But is the current WWE Creative team the right fit for him?
Thanks to CM Punk
The new interest in MJF appears to be due to his recent feud with CM Punk as the two have bantered back and forth, and it reportedly caused a network employee to stop what they were doing to listen.
That’s a pretty cool thing when it’s also been reported that employee hasn’t done that in years when it comes to wrestling.
In a way, this does have a certain odd sense of symmetry about it.
Someone the WWE decided wasn’t tough enough is being considered in large thanks to his interactions with a talent their policies helped drive away from them.
That’s a better story than what the WWE have put forth in a long time, and it could be a potential angle they use.
Whatever direction they decide to go in will take a couple of years since they and us have to wait until 2024 for any of this to happen, but it’s fun to speculate.
