It’s not a shock to hear that the AEW give their wrestlers more creative freedom than the WWE as it seems to be the standard for most of the other promotions.
Like Vince McMahon, Tony Kahn has complete control over the creative side as was previously reported, and he’s said that he’s open to idea from anyone in the company.
That makes a huge difference, and Chris Jericho spoke about having more creative freedom on Wrestling with Freddie and how it comes across more real with AEW.
Two points of view, same conclusion
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jericho talked about the difference and how they approached it, and Prinze said he looks at it like wrestlers than can write their own promos don’t need him, but those that can’t do.
Jericho agreed and dove into it further by explaining the differences between AEW and WWE.
“You cannot write a promo for me that’s going to be better than what I can write for myself. In WWE, after working there for a dozen years, I had more freedom to do that but a lot of other guys didn’t and would have to do what they’re told.
“Therefore, it gets stagnant, sterile, it doesn’t feel real. AEW, from day one has always let the guys do their own promos, write their own stuff. Let the pros be pros, that’s what we’re paid to be, whether it be on-screen, behind the scenes, lighting or whatever.”
Jericho also explained that from the start fans could tell there was something different about AEW, and we agree.
It had a certain energy about it we haven’t seen since the Monday Night Wars with WCW and WWE before things became so constricted from a creative standpoint.
As Jericho pointed out, they may cross the line at times but it’s live and there aren’t retakes.
Too many rewrites
They also mentioned how in the WWE there are a couple of dozen pairs of eyes that go over the scripts before they get final approval and they’re often writing for that day’s show the day of. Sometimes up to showtime.
When something goes through that many rewrites and critical reviews to “get it just right,” it loses its energy and life and often come out completely flat despite the wrestler’s best efforts to sell it.
While some have more freedom than others, the WWE would be wise to loosen up more and let those that can do, and those that can’t have writers.
It’s a great system that’s working elsewhere.
