Will Ospreay never lost the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. After defeating Kota Ibushi to claim the title, Ospreay would suffer a neck injury after a successful defense against Shingo Takagi – and the belt was stripped from him. Since returning from injury, he has claimed to be the TRUE World’s champion, and tonight has a chance to back this claim up, as he faces the current IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. Last night, that title would change hands from Shingo Takagi to Kazuchika Okada. Ospreay was set to defend against Okada in Tokyo Dome before he vacated, making this match all the more fitting.
Another Big Night For Okada
Ospreay would block the opening takedown of Okada, only to end up in a headlock. He’d shove Okada off and eat the shoulder tackle, before a big boot. Ospreay stomped the foot of Okada before being launched with a back body drop.
Okada would get Ospreay on the top rope but couldn’t get the dropkick. Instead, Ospreay set him up on the top, dropped him with a chop before a hanging DDT for a two count. The springboard forearm, before some more slow strikes on the outside. Back in the ring, Ospreay hit a big spinning backbreaker, but only got a two count.
A cravate would be applied, and Okada fought free to nail a big flapjack. Okada would pick up some speed and avoid Ospreay before hitting the running back elbow. Tombstone was set, but Ospreay fled to the apron instead. They’d trade forearm shots, before a shotgun dropkick launched Ospreay into the steel ring post.
Ospreay would be run into the barricade and hit with a big boot, before Okada wanted that flying crossbody only to take a superkick in mid-air. Okada would be set up as Ospreay climbed the lighting rig, before he’d nail the moonsault. Ospreay would follow up in the ring with a forearm to the back of the head, before a powerbomb for a two count.
Kazuchika Okada Outlasts Will Ospreay’s Assault
Chelsea Grin was set up, but Okada was able to block. Okada was sent outside where he caught the Sasuke Special into a Tombstone onto the floor. Back into the ring, a super shotgun dropkick landed, and a big elbow drop from the top rope would follow. Rainmaker pose was hit, but Ospreay was able to counter away from the lariat.
He’d catch a dropkick from Okada into a powerbomb, getting a two count. Two shooting star presses would follow, but Okada still held on. OsCutter would follow, and Chelsea Grin landed. Hidden Blade was set, but Okada dodged before Ospreay hit a tombstone. Okada responded by hitting Stormbreaker on Ospreay, but only got two.
Rainmaker was blocked into a Spanish Fly, before Ospreay looked for the Super OsCutter. This was still not enough, as Okada came back with a spinning tombstone. Another Rainmaker was blocked before the spinning variant landed. Finally, Rainmaker landed, but Ospreay kicked out. Money Clip was applied, but Okada flung Ospreay over before an exchange of forearms.
Finally Okada nailed a set of short-arm lariats, before Ospreay was able to set up Hidden Blade for a two count. Okada took a pumping knee to the jaw, and another Hidden Blade was blocked with a dropkick. Landslide into Rainmaker, and Okada remains champion.
Naito would stroll to the ring to meet one of his greatest rivals, and after beating Jeff Cobb earlier in the night, he earned his shot. He wants next, and who is Okada to turn him down?
