In another instance TikTok going wrong, user Whitney Leavitt (@whitleavitt) landed in hot water for a now-deleted video of her dancing next to her newborn son who has to receive supplemental oxygen treatment.
TikTok User Receives Hateful Messages for Dancing While Baby Receives Treatment
Leavitt’s son Liam is diagnosed with RSV or Human respiratory syncytial virus, an infection of the respiratory tract which lasts days or weeks and is usually found in infants and children up to 2-years-old.
TikTok Gone Wrong: Woman Is Dragged On Social Media For Videos Showing Her Dancing While Newborn Receives Supplemental Oxygen
In the deleted video, she explains her son’s condition and treatment via captions while dancing to Kendrick Lamar’s “Love’. The combination of serious subjects and dancing was too much for some and the treats and negativity came in when the video was reposted to Twitter and made its rounds on the Daily Mail and The Sun.
Leavitt would take the video down but said that viewers took the captions out of context as she typically answers questions on her TikTok while dancing. As she was informing users of her child’s condition stuck with her approach. Of the backlash, Leavitt told BuzzFeed News:
“It was really bad, people were telling me to end my life, they wished my family would die. I felt like I had completely lost control to clear up the context of everything of why I made the video and the reason of what motivated me to make the video and I feel like people completely took it out of context.”
Between December 18 to when the video was deleted, it picked up over 1.6 million views when it was shared on social media and in online publications two days later. Even after she deleted the video, it survived on Twitter and Reddit and continued to be circulated.
While there is no concrete way to grieve or show concern and everyone does it in their own way and on their own time, I can see why so many were upset since it appears to be a particularly shocking juxtaposition of activities and the situation.
