On Sunday, former Extra host and 2019 Miss USA, Cheslie Kryst fell to her death from a 60-story condominium in Manhattan.
Following her death, colleagues have paid tribute to the television personality. Billy Bush, Kryst’s co-host on Extra, described her as being “positive, hardworking, fun and of course beautiful” on Instagram.
Extra Host and Miss USA 2019 Cheslie Kryst Dead at 30
Cheslie Kryst was found Sunday morning shortly after 7 outside of her condo where she lived on the ninth floor. It is reported that she jumped from the terrace on the 29th floor. A suicide note was left where she wished for her belongings to be given to her mother. Leading up to her death, she had some apprehension about turning thirty last year.
In an essay for Allure Kryst touched on reaching her third decade, she opened with the following:
Each time I say, “I’m turning 30,” I cringe a little. Sometimes I can successfully mask this uncomfortable response with excitement; other times, my enthusiasm feels hollow, like bad acting. Society has never been kind to those growing old, especially women. (Occasional exceptions are made for some of the rich and a few of the famous.)
The rest of that essay is something of a rollercoaster about the fear of turning thirty, what she had left as she aged, and her accomplishment of becoming Miss USA while bucking the traditional expectations of the role. It ends with Kryst embracing the unknown of what awaited her on the other side of 20:
Now, I enter year 30 searching for joy and purpose on my own terms — and that feels like my own sweet victory.
Of course, it’s important to remember that she wrote that in March 2021. The details of her private life leading up to her suicide are unknown but, in that time, life could’ve changed for her while her public and professional perception was much lighter. Extra and my others have shared condolences and memories of Cheslie Kryst following news of the lawyer and show host’s death. Her family also shared words about her:
Cheslie embodied love and served others, whether through her work as an attorney fighting for social justice, as Miss USA and as a host on Extra. But most importantly, as a daughter, sister, friend, mentor and colleague – we know her impact will live on.
