It has been a very long time since Brian Cage was last seen on AEW programming. Initially brought into the company back in 2020, with Cage making his debut at Double or Nothing as part of the Casino Ladder Match – he was seemingly set for Main Event success. Aligned with Taz, he’d go after AEW World Champion Jon Moxley – losing at Fight for The Fallen 2020. After this, he’d have a few more big matches before splitting off from Team Taz – and all but vanishing from TV in the process.
AEW Extends The Contract Of Brian Cage?
Now in 2022, it was expected that the contract of Brian Cage would be dropped by AEW. They are not able to keep everyone they ever signed under contract – and some cuts are going to have to come. Already Peter Avalon has been moved to a “per-appearance” contract, with Marko Stunt & Joey Janela also expected to be end up on similar deals.
Basically, anyone on the AEW roster who doesn’t get TV time anymore was not likely to stick around. Bigger names have come in, and it’s harder than ever to find a spot on either AEW Dynamite or Rampage. This is what made the news around the contract of Cage all the more interesting.
Cage has not been on AEW TV since October 2021, but now there are reports that AEW have added another year to the contract of Cage – an option that was placed into his initial contract. Essentially he had signed a two year deal, with a chance of a third year in the mix. Even Cage himself has been seemingly surprised by these reports. On Twitter when it was reported by Fightful Select that Cage has told those close to him that AEW picked up the third year option, he’d reply with the following.
“Hmmm, not sure who I told all of this too.”
If nothing else – this is an interesting situation. Brian Cage still has a place on the roster, and is someone who could instantly be put into the AEW World Championship picture. However, fans are also upset with how he’s been held off TV for so long – and were hoping his contract would expire, allowing him to show up in a place like WWE. Putting him back on TV would fix this quickly.
