Tony Khan has been on a tear attacking WWE on X and seems like he’s escalating. Depending on who you ask, the AEW owner is either delivering burns to WWE or desperately seeking attention and needs to put the phone down. From the looks of it, things are leaning towards “Tony put the phone away.”
Apparently Even Those in AEW Want Tony Khan to Chill on the WWE Bashing
Khan’s attacks—absolutely ignored by WWE who proceeded to have a stacked NXT dunk on AEW Dynamite—weren’t viewed favorably by the wrestling media. That’s mainly because most of this news that comes out is viewed in the lens of what’s best for a company, how to best utilize a talent, the talent’s contractual situation—it’s mostly cash and creative.
This ties a bit into the cash side because it’s business, not personal and Tony Khan’s trolling comes off as immature and borderline edgelord-y at the minimum and a brand risk at worse. That’s when you factor in that he’s the owner of the second largest wrestling company in North America.
Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer Live podcast said of the tweets:
“I’ve heard that Tony needs to get off his phone and stop tweeting. You know who I heard that from? Not WWE, well, yeah from WWE too, but also from AEW. They are saying ‘will someone get this guy’s phone from him?’”
It just comes off as unprofessional—especially when you have a broadcast partner with ad partners who are very selective about who they do business with or bring onboard. In Tony’s case, these shots at WWE have been called a meltdown and it could jeopardize things for AEW with their partners—like using a pizza cutter to cut an opponent while a Domino’s commercial is in picture-in-picture.
Tony Khan targeted Triple H HBK as booker of the year under the delusion that the shows weren’t good despite NXT winning in the ratings against AEW Title Tuesday with a tweet featuring a door spray painted with “BALD ASSHOLE”, dunking on Vince McMahon as a punchline, The Undertaker, and John Cena—who juiced up NXT.
Sure, a little competitive banter is cool but when the bookers involved are all over 40 and one is tweeting like they’re in their early 20s in 2013, that’s not good at all.
