It looks like the WWE may not be ready to let go of their latest celebrity tie in as Dave Meltzer has reported that Sami Zayn may defend the Intercontinental Championship against Johnny Knoxville at WrestleMania.
Having a celebrity taking part in any event, much less WrestleMania, isn’t anything new to the WWE as they’ve been a part of the company and show since the earliest days.
Last year the WWE had Bad Bunny in a tag match with Damian Priest and Logan Paul in Sami Zayn’s corner for his match against Kevin Owens.
And since Zayn of one of the company’s best, and highly underrated in my opinion, he’s the perfect one to work with Knoxville to push their feud into WrestleMania.
Going with what works
While it was reported that Knoxville’s working relationship with the WWE was a once off thing for the Royal Rumble, it appears that’s not the case given their feud has continued on.
Both have given it some of their best shots and it’s been pretty entertaining, and Knoxville is probably the most willing person to work with the WWE when it comes to taking stiff shots.
He’s spent his career taking all kinds of abuse on Jackass and the franchise’s subsequent movies, and his stuntman side fits in well with the WWE when it comes to selling the shots.
Because of that and his status, this could be considered a marquee type of match and be given all the bells and whistles we’ve come to expect over the years.
To add to it, this has the potential to be a pretty good match, assuming Meltzer’s right, and all signs seem to be pointing in that direction.
Devaluing an important championship?
The Intercontinental Championship is an iconic and important championship in the WWE, or at least it was.
There will be plenty of claims that this is showing disrespect to the title and devaluing, and while those arguments aren’t wrong, the WWE already did that.
They devalued all of their championships by making new versions or incorporating others for each brand for the alleged purpose of selling more merchandise.
For the longest time, fans have been pointing out the lack of prestige around the Intercontinental title and the way the WWE has treated it the last few years only reinforces those claims and its tarnished image.
Granted, it started to make a comeback as a serious title this past year, but those strides could be undone if this match happens.
It’s a narrow line the WWE has to walk, and we’re curious if they’ll walk it or trip and fall to one side or another.
