While NXT is back to feeling like a developmental system for WWE with the 2.0 rebranding, that was always the goal. Even indie superstars like Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly had room to grow, and now AEW is benefitting from that growth – as both Cole & O’Reilly have jumped ship. However, they have fond times to look back on – and O’Reilly now praises Shawn Michaels for really helping him improve when it comes to putting together main event matches.
Shawn Michaels Helped Teach Kyle O’Reilly How To Work Main Event Matches
When it comes to notable main event wrestlers in WWE history, Shawn Michaels is certainly someone who knows how to put together a classic. Having some of the greatest matches in WWE history under his belt, Michaels is now a crucial part of the NXT system, currently running NXT 2.0 and previously having taught the final class.
He was responsible with getting talents ready to move to the main roster, which includes teaching how to structure a main event match. While speaking on AEW’s Unrestricted podcast, Kyle O’Reilly would say the following about how Michaels helped him improve in this aspect.
“I learned a lot about structuring a main event match. There’s that age-old adage in pro wrestling, ‘listen to the people, listen to the people.’ I never really got what that meant. ‘I’m listening to them. They’re cheering, they’re quieting down, they’re cheering.’ Shawn really taught us that, instead of going up and down with the crowd reaction, trying to keep it at a level. So, on a double down, just don’t move until they start to die, and then you can move and you bring them back up. Little things like that, that you don’t really think of and it’s really hard to learn on your own until someone explains that to you, and then a light bulb goes off and it helps take your game to the next level.”
Where Is O’Reilly Been In AEW?
We haven’t really seen Kyle O’Reilly wrestle much since joining the AEW roster. He’s not been in the ring since New Years Smash, but this isn’t a situation of AEW not knowing what to do with O’Reilly – but something closer to home. O’Reilly’s wife recently gave birth, and AEW was able to give him time to spend with his newborn daughter. Once O’Reilly returns, we can expect him and Bobby Fish to continue their issues with The Young Bucks – as they battle over the affection of Adam Cole.
